How to set the mood for my gothic story?

There are two horse riders, there's a full moon, half hidden by the stormy clouds, it's raining heavily, there's thunder and lightning, the ground is soggy, it's really dark and cold. 15 points + best answer to the most effective description x and no "it was a dark and stormy night" ;)
