In dead space 1, can you buy guns without using them and still get the achievement one gun?

I want to get the achievement "one gun" but can you still get that achievement if you purchase other guns? I want to also get the achievement "maxed out" so that means I have to buy the guns in order to upgrade them. Does anyone know if I can do this or not?
